PROFESSIONAL EXPERIENCE
2015 to present: Self-Employed Engineering Consultant
Supporting a number of customer companies, domestic and international, with analysis and engineering assessments in the fields of gas turbines, aerodynamic rig design and testing, heat management systems, and micro-turbines.
Providing training and assistance to customers in process definition and review, Part 21 certification, thermal analysis, and general gas turbine design. Support provided on-site and via online sessions.
More recently heat management concepts for hybrid systems in non-aerospace applications while continuing to support existing aerospace customers.
2012 to 2015: East Kilbride Engineering Services (ekes) Ltd (later GmbH)
Leader of the thermal analysis group in the ekes offices in Dahlewitz (near Berlin), responsible for developing the thermal analysis capability in support of Rolls-Royce Deutschland (RRD). Grew the analysis team from 3 to 10 analysts. Tasks covered all of the RRD engine family including new designs and support of in-service engines and included temperature predictions, displacement and clearance analyses plus Monte Carlo uncertainty assessments, test definition and planning, and component validation against test data.
Responsible for technical quality, budget, and timescales of the analysis work performed by the group. Scoping and definition of work packages, and feedback to customer on progress and issues (technical & non-technical). Liaison with other ekes sites to integrate methods development and co-ordinate workload across the group. Defining training and development plans for my group.
2006 to 2012 East Kilbride Engineering Services (ekes) Ltd
Working on site in RRD on V2500, BR700, Tay, TP400, Trent 1000 and Trent XWB and preliminary design assessments in support of the Future Applications Group. Responsibilities included component temperature and displacement predictions and validation. Support for investigations of in-service problems and component and module thermal validation and certification strategies.
2002 to 2006 Graphic Engineering Design Ltd
Working on site in MTU on PW6000 HP compressor and TP400 IP turbine analysis and validation. International collaboration with the various partner companies in the two main projects.
1998 to 2002 East Kilbride Engineering Services (ekes) Ltd
Working on site in RRD as a thermal analyst in the Turbine and Compressor Departments. Thermal analysis for new designs and in-service engines.
1994 to 1998 INBIS Ltd (formerly Ricardo Aerospace)
Working on site in RRD (initially BMW Rolls-Royce) as a thermal analyst. Performed thermal prediction & validation of rotors, casings and static structures with an emphasis on turbine casings and tip clearances.
1989 to 1994 Rolls-Royce Limited
Turbine aerodynamic rig testing group. As rig owner responsible for the whole life cycle of each rig from initial specification through design, build, test, and analysis and presentation of results.
